Boathooks
Main Headers > Deck > Boathooks
Now I reckon most of these are bought by guilty crew members who have just dropped the last one over the side. If you are going to make a habit of it, I'd recommend you stop right here and go to a proper chandlery and get a floating aluminium pole thingy. You think the skipper would notice the difference? Oh well, better carry on here then.

1. Double Boathooks
It takes all sorts, but I've always found double boathooks a bit less aggressive than their single & spike cousins. You can avert disasters less damagingly - if there is such a word. The 6" ones fit 1 1/4" staves, and the 8" ones fit 1 1/2" staves.
2. Grabit Boathook
The original, and still the best boathook for attaching a line to a mooring buoy or ring. Cast in aluminium bronze, one sweep with the grabit leaves the boat secure whilst a permanent mooring is attached. Well, maybe two sweeps if you are having a bad day.
3. Single Boathooks
On the other hand if you are in pirate country or need to pole out a foresail….. The 6" ones fit 1 1/4" staves, and the 8" ones fit 1 1/2" staves.
4. Staves
I know these are expensive, but in contrast to dowelling the ash is tough, flexible and with enough varnish/paint, long-lasting. You don't want to see the splinters from a ramin boathook breaking at the critical moment - very long and very sharp. For our international customers, transporting these is likely to be expensive, so please check first, or see what you can get locally.
